چکیده

Abstract The analysis of entangled atomic ensembles and their application for interferometry beyond the standard quantum limit requires an accurate determination number atoms. We present fluorescence detection technique atoms that is fully integrated into experimental apparatus production many-particle states. Number-resolved measurements with single-atom accuracy 1 up to 30 are presented. According our noise analysis, we extrapolate extends a limiting atom 390(20) utilize stabilization laser-cooled ensemble. For target ensemble size 7 prepared on demand, achieve 92(2)% preparation fidelity reach fluctuations 18(1) dB below shot level using real-time feedback magneto-optical trap.

Probing fluctuations in a lattice of mesoscopic atomic ensembles

We experimentally probe intrinsic atom number fluctuations in trapped ensembles of ultracold atoms on a magnetic lattice atom chip. Advanced post-processing and optimal analysis techniques allow the detection of intrinsic fluctuations in the number of atoms in small atomic ensembles with absorption imaging. A fringe removal algorithm reduces imaging noise to the fundamental photon shot noise li...

Dipole blockade and quantum information processing in mesoscopic atomic ensembles.

We describe a technique for manipulating quantum information stored in collective states of mesoscopic ensembles. Quantum processing is accomplished by optical excitation into states with strong dipole-dipole interactions. The resulting "dipole blockade" can be used to inhibit transitions into all but singly excited collective states. This can be employed for a controlled generation of collecti...

Heralded entanglement between atomic ensembles: preparation, decoherence, and scaling.

Heralded entanglement between collective excitations in two atomic ensembles is probabilistically generated, stored, and converted to single-photon fields. By way of the concurrence, quantitative characterizations are reported for the scaling behavior of entanglement with excitation probability and for the temporal dynamics of various correlations resulting in the decay of entanglement. A lower...

Accurate atom counting in mesoscopic ensembles.

Many cold atom experiments rely on precise atom number detection, especially in the context of quantum-enhanced metrology where effects at the single particle level are important. Here, we investigate the limits of atom number counting via resonant fluorescence detection for mesoscopic samples of trapped atoms. We characterize the precision of these fluorescence measurements beginning from the ...
